Exhilarating fort building contest
Building fort models in courtyards and paying rich tributes to the great Maratha Warrior Shivaji during Diwali is an age-old tradition in Maharashtra. The Sakal Diwali fest reinforced the same. This fort modeling contest held at Crossover County is ample proof.

They were exact replicas of real forts. The stone barricades, water bodies, hilly contours and topography all stood for the original and were created by a bunch of zealous competitors at a fort modelling competition in the Sakal Diwali Fest.

Organized by the Sakal group and Darode Jog Properties (DJP) at Crossover County, a premium housing scheme on Sinhagad road, on October 16-17, the contest became a hit among young and the old alike.

Two categories, open – for adults and the other, for school students above seven years, saw a total of fifty entries. The participants were asked to creatively erect mini structures as either replicas of historical fortresses or as imaginary forts.

Bagging the first prize in the open division for his realistic portrayal of forts Salher and Salota, Balaraj Mudliar, a city youth informs, “We were a team of four.” A professional artist and sculptor, Mudliar says his hobby of ‘visiting forts’ amply helps him in such contests.

The serene locales of Crossover County came alive with verve. The two days that witnessed the fort building activity resembled a battle front where children hurriedly executed construction of mini forts in materials like clay, soil, bricks etc. The contest was held under the able supervision and guidance of artist Kamlesh Dharmik, whose models of eight forts were also displayed at the venue.

The contest saw award winning entries like the models of fort Janjira, Sinhagad, Devgiri,Lohagad etc. Complimenting the artists, judge, Historian Ninad Bedekar remarked, “The children have done a great job.” Anand Jog, MD, DJP, said’ “We are overwhelmed with the response to this contest. We have decided to allot a huge one-acre space for this effort next year.” The prizes were given away by Anand Jog, Sudhir Darode and Bedekar. The event was ably compeered by Yogesh Deshpande. Historain Nanivdekar was a judge too.

Real life models..
Artist Kamlesh Dharmik displays his fort replicas – Eight forts, symbols of historic tradition during the Maharashtra Premier League cricketing event in May 2009.

His lanky figure is hastily moving from spot to spot as he is busy decorating the models of eight historical Maharashtra forts, ahead of the Fort Building Contest. Kamlesh Dharmik, fort modeling expert says as he indulges in his passion- constructing forts, “The contours and topography of all the models are by the real scale. I am using a coat of plaster of Paris on the clay and the final coat is that of colour.”

Twentyfour hours later, Kamlesh is successful in displaying a row of breath taking fort models at Crossover County, the venue of the Fort building contest. The eight forts of Sinhagad, Devgiri, Panhala, Torna, Raigad, Pratapgad, Shivneri and Sindhudurg stand replicated in real grandeur matching the originals. Says Kamlesh, “These are testimony to the great Maratha history and were either conquered or constructed by Maharaj”.

All these eight forts with their various histories were recently used as iconic names to the teams in Maharashtra Premier League,  a Sakal initiative. Kamlesh creatively brought out the specialty of each structure in his replica.
